An important fact about the pH scale is that it is logarithmic. This means that a difference of one pH unit represents a 10-fold difference in acidity or basicity. A difference of two pH units represents a 100-fold difference; three pH units represents a 1000-fold difference, and so on. This allows us to compare extremely large differences in acidity or basicity on a relatively simple scale.
For example, let's approximate and say that the pH of rainwater is 5, and the pH of vinegar is 3. This does not mean that vinegar is two times more acidic than rainwater. This means that vinegar is 100 times (102) more acidic than rainwater.
Let's try another example. Let's assume the pH of an egg white is 8, and the pH of lemon juice is 2. This means that lemon juice is 1 million times (106) more acidic than an egg white!
